At 7Cellars, our winemaking team wants to make sure you know how to open a bottle of wine, regardless if you have a waiter’s key or not! Learning the ins and outs of getting a bottle of wine open without a corkscrew is crucial to ensuring that you’ll have a vino-filled evening! Below, you will find a step-by-step guide that details a few different methods you can use to get your bottle of 7Cellars wine open and decanted with no corkscrew at all!
Disclaimer: These methods of getting a bottle of wine open without a corkscrew are not always 100% foolproof. If done incorrectly, some of these tactics are prone to ruining your bottle of wine with little hope of salvaging it. From the wine bottle breaking, to the cork shedding into the wine, there are multiple ways these DIY methods can mess things up. Always be conscious of what you’re doing, and make sure to find a corkscrew if you are trying to open any rare bottles of wine!
Method 1: Screw, Screwdriver, & Hammer
This method requires a long screw (the longer, the better), a hammer, and a screwdriver, and is one of the safest ways to get a cork out of a wine bottle without a waiter’s key. Before you start going to town, be aware that this tactic requires a lot of strength and dedication, as it can fatigue you easily. Simply take a screw and screw it into the center of the cork with a screwdriver until there is about an inch or so of the screw left showing. Once the screw is in place, take the claw of the hammer, lock it under the screw, and start pulling the cork out.
Method 2: Wooden Spoon Handle
To get your bottle of wine open, simply take the handle of your wooden spoon, or something similar in size and length, and push the cork down into the bottle of wine. With this method, it’s impossible to remove the cork from the bottle once you push it in. Additionally, if your bottle of wine is old, the cork may crumble and shed into the wine once pushed in…ruining your entire bottle immediately.
Method 3: Bike Pump
Take a bike pump that has a long needle attached to it and push it all the way through the cork until the needle reaches the air between the cork and the wine. Then, pump air into the bottle. As you pump, the cork should slowly move out of the bottle from the air pressure you’re putting inside it.
Method 4: Smack It Out
The last and final method is also the most dangerous one! Proceed with caution, as the bottle could shatter in your hands and dump wine all over the floor. Simply wrap the bottom of the wine bottle in a thick towel – or two to be extra safe- and then bang it against a wall repeatedly. You can also use the towel-wrapped bottle and place it inside a shoe to add more protection, similarly smacking the sole of the shoe against the wall, or with your hand. Remember to stop your smack-fest once the cork gets close to coming completely out, otherwise, you’re going to have a huge – and permanent – mess on your hands.
